Virunga Mountains National Park

The Virunga Mountains (also known as Mufumbiro[1]) are a chain of volcanoes in East Africa, along the northern border of Rwanda, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), and Uganda. The entire Virunga mountain zone is popular for the Gorilla trekking Safaris. But it is not the only thing the visitors enjoy when they come to Virunga Mountains. The golden monkeys and some other wild beasts endemic to this region are some of the best excitements that the visitors can view on their way to track the Gorillas. The forest walk, the volcanic hiking and the birding are some of the other ways to make your Rwanda Tour enthralling.

There has been the even distribution of 8 volcanoes of Virunga among three countries. Most of them are dormant. The volcanoes like Mountain Karisimbi, Mount Muhabura, Mount Bisoke, mount Gahinga etc, are always open to the tourists and one can have a different experience while climbing it.

Mountain Gorillas in Virunga are in an endangered state for the reasons such as the habitat loss, poaching, disease, and war. A lot of measures are being taken by the park authorities to protect these animals and also it is a good sign that, the visitors from all around the world have started extending their co-operative hand for the promotion of eco-friendly Gorilla Trekking. A visit to Karisoke Research Center, founded by Dian Fossey to observe gorillas in their native habitat, is located between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke.
